Top 7 Tips On How To Care For Your Glass Palette

AMAZING TOP TIPS

(1) Do not mix acrylic and oil paints on the same palette. Make a separate palette for each material.

(2) Keep paint for later by covering it with plastic wrap (up to 2 days). You can place a wet sponge under the plastic wrap to wrap to create humidity in order to keep the paint longer.
(i) To Clean - For Acrylic Paint: Scrape off unwanted paint while it's wet. Allow the remaining paint to dry completely. Spray water over the dried paint and wait for 2 minutes until the paint begins to pucker. Use an angled palette knife to scrape up the paint. Then use a cloth or rag to wipe down the remaining bits of paint.
Note: Do not put the palette underwater.

(1) ACRYLIC PAINT:  As a beginner or a Startup Artist, You will be faced with some many questions like:

Where to Buy Acrylic Paints: AVAILABLE ON AMAZON

(i) What Brand of Acrylic Paint Should I Buy??
I think you should get the best quality you can afford. Any of the major brands will do. As you may know, Every Artist have their own preferred brands based on things such as the consistency of the paint and availability of the colors. But if i should suggest, I will advice you to for Golden Acrylics or Liquitex or Utretch as to these are the one's I'm acquainted with. But it's all just a matter of choice. Of course any brand will do!!!.

(ii) Am I to Purchase the Artist's Quality or Student Quality of Acrylic Paint??
When purchasing the quality of acrylic paint for your artwork, Just as i made it clear before, that it is all a matter of choice and also it depends on how buoyant your pocket is. But the good news here is that the both of them are all nice quality and YES!!!  they are all mixable. Although they all have their advantages and disadvantages. Students quality is quite cheaper and respond less efficiently to colors and media mixing.

Where to Buy Acrylic Paints: AVAILABLE ON AMAZON

While Artists quality is more expensive and gives higher performance in terms of color and final results. So if i will have to suggest, I would really say that for beginners, it is advisable to go for students quality as to it will be a lot cheaper for you and it will also aid in your experimental paintings but as soon as you perfect your painting skills, I prefer you switch over to Artists Quality as it will aid in giving your work a more sharper, brighter and outstanding look.

(2) ACRYLIC PAINT BRUSHES: Paint Brushes are one of the most essential materials needed in painting because it is what defines how your painting or work will look like. Paint brushes comes in variety of types, shapes & sizes, As a beginner you will be faced with an array of shapes and you also get different length handles. Paint brushes can come in two (2) main forms which are:
(1) Natural
(2) Synthetic

Where to Buy Paint Brushes: AVAILABLE ON AMAZON

Where to Buy Paint Professional Brushes: AVAILABLE ON AMAZON

Natural brushes are quite expensive while Synthetic brushes are usually cheaper and are all fine for acrylic paintings. So as a beginner, I recommend you will need stiff-bristled brushes for thick acrylic paint and soft-bristled brushes for thick water color effects. but if you are on a tight budget, I suggest that you start with a small and medium sized filbert (A flat pointed brush).
Note: Please always remember to keep your brushes in good conditions and make sure you clean them clean them thoroughly with soapy water, rinse well and lay them flat to dry after each painting session.

(3) WATER CONTAINER: Water containers are very essential and important in Acrylic Painting Basics. The reason why i consider water as one of the essential materials in painting is because you will be needing it to rinse the brushes when you switch from one color to another.

Where To Buy Art Brush Wash Bucket: AVAILABLE ON AMAZON

You will also be needing some sort of receptacle like Jug, Cup, etc. to hold the water. Any container can actually be used as long as it is washed thoroughly and clean. It is also important that you get at least two (2) containers of water. One will be used used to rinse brushes from paint each time you switch from one color to another. While the second container filled with clean water will be used to dilute paint and moisten brushes when needed.

(4) PAINTING SUPPORT: Painting supports can refer to the suitable support for acrylic painting which may include paper, wood, canvas, canvas boards etc. Acrylic paint works on many kinds of surfaces. If you are to purchase a pre-primed canvas, check that it's been primed with acrylic gesso or something suitable for acrylics.

Where To Buy Painting Support: AVAILABLE ON AMAZON

Acrylics don't stick on oily surfaces, and would peel off with time. When making a choice of the most preferred painting support for beginner, I would suggest you go for canvas because canvas is usually the fabric of choice to paint a flat painting on. But when you perfect your painting skills and start thinking like a designer, Then you can now paint on any fabric to wear as a garment or use as a decorative item.

(5) PALETTE: Palette is a thin board with a hole in it for the thumb to go through by Artists for mixing colors on when painting. Palettes can be made of paper, wood or plastic and can be of various forms like:
(i) Stay - Wet Palettes: Stay - wet palette is a box with a thin sponge on the bottom and  an airtight sealed lid. The sponge is covered with a special heavy, disposable, reusable paper. Dampen both the sponge and the paper and place acrylic paint on the paper. The sponge keeps the paints wet while working and the lid (If Sealed) can keep paint from drying for about a week.

Where To Buy Acrylic Painting Palettes: AVAILABLE ON AMAZON

(ii) Disposable Paper Palette: Disposable paper palette are a good solution for easy clean up. Disposable paper palette comes in pads and are similar to waxed paper. The slick surface doesn't allow water to pass through, So you don't have to worry about paint soaking in. All you just have to do is to tear off the top sheet when it's messed up to reveal a fresh one.

(iii) Non - Porous Palettes:  Acrylic paint doesn't stick to non-porous surfaces, All you just have to do is just to peel off of these palettes. Acrylic Plastic Palettes, Glass and High Density Plastic are also available in Non - Porous Palettes.

(B) Note: Before You Start Painting, You Should Always Need To Have An Idea Of What You Want To Paint...  Let art flow through you and not you trying to force it on yourself. Try imagining beautiful things, objects and realistic nature and then keep practicing it. As a beginner, I know it would be kinda tough and challenging for you but always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other thing. Keep doing what you are doing, never think its impossible for whatever the mind can conceive and believe, that you can achieve.. Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war for the greatest glory in living lies not in never failing but in rising each time we fail. Remember Success is never Found, Failure is never Fatal, Courage is the only thing.

Thank you for your time and stay tuned for many more and more interesting posts on everything you need to know and succeed in the world of art and painting.

Top Major 6 Principles of Art and Design For Artists and Beginners.

Top Major 6 Principles of Art and Design For Artists and Beginners.
In addition to this post on Top Major 6 Principles of Art & Design For Artists and Beginners Cont'd as discussed in our previous article on 5 Basic Principles of Art & Design For Artists and Beginners. If you can remember vividly in the previous article when i said that i was just going to discuss and analyze only a few principles of Art & Design, So today I have brought you the continuation part of our previous article just like as i promised. So sit tight, grab a cup a coffee and relax as i take you on another interesting topic that might come in handy that you must know to succeed in the world of Art.

The principles of Art & Design defines how the Artists design their work, either consciously or unconsciously, by controlling, ordering and combining the element of Art and Painting. Principles of Art and Design can simply be said to be the way the art elements are used in final composition. The principles of Art and Design are divided into various forms which are as follows:

(i) Emphasis
(ii) Repetition
(iii) Harmony
(iv) Perspective
(v) Proportion
(vi) Rhythm etc.

READ MORE: 5 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ART & DESIGN FOR ARTISTS AND BEGINNERS.

These principles listed above are the basic knowledge and analytical framework every artist and Beginners must and should know in order to succeed and do great in Art.

(1) EMPHASIS: Emphasis is an area or object within the artwork that draws attention and become a focal point. Emphasis is another most important element or character in a composition which can be achieved through the use of a focal point. If too many focal point is being emphasized, It might confuse the viewer.

EMPHASIS                                    EMPHASIS

Emphasis can also be achieved through the following ways:

(i)  Isolation: This is when one item is isolated from the other elements or group of elements, It becomes the focal point.
(ii) Placement: This happens when if too many elements point to one item, all attentions is then directed towards that element and a focal point is then said to be achieved.
(iii) Contrast: Any item that differs from the from the dominant figures in a composition. A change in color or value can immediately attract attention. Color is an element often used in emphasis by contrast.

Emphasis is used by artists to create dominance and focus in their work. Artists can emphasize value, color, shape, or other Art element to achieve dominance.

(2) REPETITION: Repetition can be used on all of the visual element. If one shape or objects are repeated without any change, They can quickly get boring. Repetition works with pattern to make the art-work seem active. That is to say that repetition in some cases gives motion of objects in a picture or visual image. Although motion is not a principle, but rather it is one of the magic effects seen in a still life picture when it has motion.

REPETITION
REPETITION

(3) HARMONY: Harmony simply means pleasant musical sound made by different notes being placed or sung at the same time. When people are peaceful and agree with each other, or when things seem right or suitable together. In visual design, Harmony means all parts of the visual image relating to and complementing each other.
Harmony in music, describes how complementary layers and or effects can be joined to produce a more attractive whole. The composition is complex but everything appears to fit with everything else.

HARMONY

Harmony pulls the pieces of a visual image together and can be achieved through;

(i) Rhythm: Rhythm is the flow depicted in a visual.
(ii) Repetition: Repetition re-emphasizes visual units connecting parts and creating an area of attention.
(iii) Pattern: Pattern is a combination of elements or shapes repeated in a recurring and regular arrangement. In pattern, When it is repeated in an interesting arrangement, the overall visual image comes interesting.

(4) PROPORTION /  SCALE:  Proportion is the relative size of parts of a whole element within an object. It can also be said to be the relative size of an object when compared against other elements or standard. That is to say that proportion simply refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a design. While scale can be the size of an object in relative to another object.

PROPORTION / SCALE
PROPORTION / SCALE

There are two ways to consider scale in Art.

(i) Scale is used within Artistic compositions.
(ii) The Scale of the work itself, its size in relation to others works. That is to say that often, the scale of a work can add to the compositions visual impact.

Scale can be used to distract or confuse the viewer by providing an unreal sense of proportion.
It can also be used to draw the viewers attention to the exaggerated or unexpected.

(5) RHYTHM: Rhythm is a combination of elements repeated with variations. Rhythm can be achieved through the repetition of visual movement of the element which are space, color, lines, textures, values, shapes and forms. Rhythm provided a sense of motion. It also refers to the artists attempt to move the viewers attention across recurrent motifs in a composition using the repetition inherent to the idea of a visual tempo or beat.

RHYTHM
RHYTHM

Other types of rhythm are as follows:

(i) Progressive: This type of rhythm is most often achieved with a progressive variation of the size of a shape, though it's color, value or texture could be the varying element.
(ii)  Alternating: In this type of rhythm, Successive patterns of the same elements reappear in a regular order.
(iii) Perspective: Perspective is created through the arrangement of objects in two-dimensional space to look like they appear in real life. It adds realism to a visual image. Perspective can be used to draw the audience in a visual and it can be achieved through the use of relative sizes of objects, overlapping objects and blurring or sharpening objects.

5 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ART and DESIGN FOR ARTISTS AND BEGINNERS

The principles of Art and Design can simply be said to be the way the art elements are used in final composition. The principles of Art and Design are divided into various forms which are as follows:

5 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ART and DESIGN FOR ARTISTS AND BEGINNERS.(1) Movement
(2) Balance
(3) Variety
(4) Emphasis
(5) Unity
(6) Rhythm
(7) Proportion
(8) Pattern
(9) Harmony
(10) Repetition
(11) Perspective etc.

They all define how the Artists design their work, either consciously or unconsciously, by controlling, ordering and combining the Elements of Art and Painting. These principles listed above are the basic knowledge and analytical framework every Artist and Beginners should know in order to excel and do great in Art.
Thus, In today's topic on principles of Art and Design, We will only be discussing but a few principles with which the rest of the other principles will be discussed on our next post on TOP MAJOR 6 PRINCIPLES OF ART AND DESIGN FOR ARTISTS AND BEGINNERS (CONT'D). So just stay tuned for the next post. So back to our discussion for today, We will start by discussing one of the basic first principle you must know which is:

(1) BALANCE: Balance can be seen as the psychological sense of equilibrium. It simply refers to the way the elements in a work are arranged to create a feeling of stability. As a design principle, balance places the parts of a visual in an aesthetically pleasing arrangement.

BALANCE

Balance can come in various forms which are:

(i) Symmetrical (Formal)
(ii) Asymmetrical (Informal)
(iii) Near Symmetrical
(iv) Radial
(v) Crystallographic

As you all may know, There are three main types of balance; Thus can be seen below:

(a) Horizontal Balance
(b) Vertical Balance
(c) Radial Balance
(2) MOVEMENT: Movement is simply the path the eyes of the artist follows in, around and through a composition's part to create a sense of motion or action through the use of different art element. Movement in a visual image comes from the kinds of forms, curves, shapes and lines that are used and can be said to occur when objects seem to be in a state of motion in a visual image.

MOVEMENT

Movement can be achieved in many ways which are as follows:

(i) Lines of ForceThey are lines added to show the pathways of movement.
(ii) Fuzzy OutlinesThey are the outlines of a figure or elements that are blurred in an attempt to capture a moment in time.
(iii) Repetition: They are figures that are repeated in such a manner to suggest sequential moments in time.
(iv) Multiple ImagesThis can be clearly seen or observed when one figure in an overlapping sequence of posses is slightly changed in each successive position.
(3) VARIETY: Variety are the contrasting elements within the composition that add interest. It provides contrast to harmony and unity. It also refers to the way elements are combined to achieve complex relationships. In a visual Image, Variety can be added by changing the point of view, size, and angle of a single object. Variety can be achieved by using opposites of strong contrasts.
By Using different variations of the same color, texture, line, shape; Artists who wish to increase the visual interest of their work, Often obtain variety through the use of change and diversity.

VARIETY
(4) PATTERN: Pattern can be said to be a combination of shapes or elements repeated in a recurring and regular arrangement. Pattern often occur in nature, and artists use similar repeated motifs to create pattern in their artwork. It increases visual excitement by enriching surface interest. Pattern uses the art elements in random or planning repetition to enhance surfaces, sculpture, or paintings.

PATTERN

(5) UNITY: Unity is one of the most important of all the Principles in Art and Design because in a work of Art, Unity showcase the sense or feeling  of wholeness and harmony of the whole composition. It gives a sense of oneness to a visual image. In other words, It is the relationship between the elements of a visual that helps all the elements function together. Unity also refers to the arrangement or congruity that exists among the elements in a design. When speaking of unity or rather say, before you can say that unity has been achieved, the viewer must first of all notice the whole pattern before they concentrate on individual elements.
UNITY

There are 3 main ways to achieve unity:
(i) Continuation
(ii) Proximity
(iii) Repetition.

Elements Of Painting/Art ~ THE 7 ELEMENTS OF PAINTING/ART

THE 7 ELEMENTS OF PAINTING/ART......

The elements of painting are the basic components or building blocks of a Painting or Art generally. When we analyse any Drawing, Painting, Sculpture or Design, We examine these component parts to see how they combine to create the overall effect of the Art-Work.

Elements Of Painting/Art ~ THE 7 ELEMENTS OF PAINTING/ARTThe visual elements have a relationship to one another. Most images begins their life as "LINE" drawings, Line drawings then crosses over one another to form what is know as "SHAPES", as you all may know that shapes can be filled with "TONE" and "COLOR", or it can be repeated to create "PATTERN". A shape may be rendered with a rough surface to create what is known as a "TEXTURE". A shape may also be projected into three dimensions to create what is called "FORM".

Each of the elements may also be used individually to stress their own particular character in an Artwork. Thus can be seen below as:

 (1) POINT (MARK): A mark or point is the smallest and most basic element - It could be a dot, Patch , Small Square, Comma or Calligraphic Mark. A point or mark is often used to form a value or pattern. It is the personal handwriting of the Artist which can be either learned or can be natural. A point or mark is the visual element upon which all others are based. It can be defined as a singularity in space or in geometric terms, The area where the two coordinates meet is called a point or mark.

READ MORE: Introduction To Painting - A GUIDE TO PAINTING BASICS.

POINT (MARK)

(2) LINE: Line is a very important Element of painting or art generally. A work of art without the use of line is quite useless. Lines are very important as they help to form shape and can communicate an idea or feeling. A line is a continuous mark with a greater length than width, which has no depth. Artists use lines to create edges, and outlines of objects. A line is created by the movement of the Artist's Pen. Line can also be referred to the continuous mark made on some surface by a moving point. They can be Implied or Actual and the directions can convey a particular state or mood, as vertical lines suggest more of a potential for movement and allude to strength and power, Horizontal lines are calm and quite and/or allude to repose, while Diagonal lines strongly suggest dynamic movement and give more of a feeling of vitality to a picture.
A line can be lyrically defined as a point in motion. Although there are different/various types of lines, all are characterized by their length being greater than their width. They can be dynamic or static depending on how the artist chooses to use them.
Listed below are the Different Types Of Drawing Lines You May Need To Know In Art

READ MORE: ACRYLIC PAINTING BASICS FOR BEGINNERS AND ARTISTS

LINE

Listed below are the DIFFERENT TYPES OF DRAWING LINES.

(3) COLOR: Color is the most complex artistic element because of the combinations and variations inherent in use. Artists value color a lot as it is a very important aspect in the element of Art, Thus because it is a wonderful tool to create combinations differently, and artists study and use color in part to give desired directions to their work.
The effect of color can have a very strong impact on your feelings. Thus, the concept of color is perceived as the light reflected off of objects which has three characteristics/properties.
(i) Hue
(ii) Value
(iii) Intensity

COLOR

(i) Hue: Hue is the first among the characteristics. It is the name of colors. Colors are organized through the use of a color wheel. One hue can be varied to produce an infinite number of colors. The primary hue's are:
(a) Yellow
(b) Blue
(c) Red

They are the Primary Hue's which are mixed to form other colors.
Secondary Colors are made by mixing two primaries together. While Intermediate Colors also known or referred to as Tertiary are mixtures of a primary and adjacent secondary color.

(ii) Value Value is very important in any work in art When color is absent. It refers to the relative lightness or darkness of one color next to another. i.e (A color on a dark background will appear lighter, While that same color on a light background will appear darker). The value of a color can make a huge difference depending on how it is perceived.

(iii) IntensityIntensity also known as "Chroma" refers to the purity of the hue. It is also referred to as the brightness or saturation of a color. A color is at full intensity only when it is pure and unmixed.

(4) SHAPE: A shape can be defined as an enclosed are in two dimension. By definition, shapes are always Implied and Flat in nature. It is an area that is contained within implied line, or it is seen and identified because of Color, Texture, Line, and Value. It often defines objects in space. A shape may be positive or negative. In a picture, the shapes that the artists has placed are considered to be the positive shapes while the spaces around the shapes are the negative spaces. For instance, consider the shape of an Island  surrounded by water. Sometime, positive and negative shapes are integrated to such an extent that there is truly no visual distinction. Shapes has two dimensions known as Length and Width and they can be geometric (Mathematical Shapes such as Rectangles, Cubes, Triangles, Cones, Circles, Spheres, Squares etc) or free-form (Such as those found in nature which can be irregular like Puddles, Snow Flakes, Blobs, Crystal Formations, Honey Combs etc.)

SHAPE

(5) FORM: The term form is often used as a synonym for shape as it describes volume and mass. It refers to a shape or three dimensional volume that has or gives the illusion of having weight, bulk or density. Although many consider form to be three - dimensional, Thus forms may have mass or value and it can be viewed from any angle. In three dimension, a form is an actual object that takes up space. A form may be classified into two different types;

FORM

(i)  Open FormAn open form is a form whose contour is irregular or broken, having a sense of growth, change or unresolved tension; form in a state of becoming.

(ii) Closed FormA closed form is a self-contained or explicitly limited form; having a resolved balance of tensions, a sense of calm completeness implying a totality within itself.
Form can be representational or abstract. They can generally refer to sculpture, 3D design and architecture but may also relate to the illusion of 3D on a 2D surface.

(6) SPACE: The element space refers to the distance or area Between, Within, Below, Around, or Above things or objects. Space can also be defined as the empty area surrounding real or implied objects. Space can also refer to the two-dimensional illusion of depth. Actual space is the three-dimensional volume that can be empty or filled with objects. Space that appears three-dimensional in a two-dimensional painting is an illusion that creates a feeling of actual depth. Within the picture frame, The illusion of space is one of the more dynamic element. In two-dimensional art forms, such as prints, drawing and painting, The artist will often want to convey a feeling of space or depth.

SPACE

  As you all may know, Clearly artists are very concerned with space in their works as they are with, say, color or form. For instance, Considering the space that exists between the viewer and the painting, It is clearly known as the physical and conceptual framework. Various techniques can be used to show such visual depth or space such as;
(i) Size
(ii) Linear Perspective
(iii) Overlapping
(iv) Vertical Location
(v)  Aerial / Atmospheric Perspective etc.

Other characteristics of space can also be deduced as follows:

(a) Space can be positive or negative
(b) Space can appear flat if devices to show depth are not used.

(7) TEXTURE: Texture can be defined as the roughness or smoothness of the material from which it is made; That is to say that it is the surface quality or feel of an artwork. It can go further to be said to be the tactile sense we get from the surface of a shape, Volume, or Object. Objects may be rough, soft, scratchy, smooth etc. They are all examples of texture.

TEXTURE

Texture can be seen in two two form; Which are as follows:
(i) Actual or Tactile
(ii) Visual or Implied

(i) Actual or Tactile: Actual is the real surface qualities we feel by running or swiping a hand over an object. i.e Textures can be felt with the fingers.

(ii) Visual or Implied: Visual is an implied sense of texture created by the artist through the manipulation of their materials. i.e Textures are suggested and purely visual.
